Why I live Here: Hyndburn, Lancashire.

butcherfront cover

Commission 2006: The project was an investigation into the reasons why people settle in Hyndburn: a place in East Lancashire, UK. Participants were photographed either at home, work or play.

Process: I set out to present the words from each interview alongside each other in a simple format. It was during the actual transcription process that I began to notice the development of one voice. The words from separate interviews developed into matching statements: sentences came together into paragraphs, paragraphs into pages and eventually into one experience or story of what it’s like to live in Hyndburn.

The publication presents a community travelling in the same direction, a community with a real sense of where it is: geographically, economically and socially. The story is one voice and that voice is many.

The words below are printed in clear varnish on the outer sleeve of the book, they were omitted from the main body of text by the artist.
